SPA 5
S.P.Y. SQUAD
What are your dreams & visions of ending youth & young adult homelessness/housing instability?
Dream starts with getting everyone housed one way or another with safe and secure housing for all to provide a safe space for everyone to grow and achieve their long term and short term goals. Vision for battling youth homelessness looks like weaving a safety net for those on the brink of losing their housing. Like making the resources available and known to youth in college, and even in high schools. It looks like hearing and communicating the struggles the members face in the organizations. Because expansion doesn't mean much if our foundation is shaky and liable to harm instead of help.
Why/how did they get into this work?
Got into this work because the thought that a member could help improve an organization with their feedback was intriguing and I wanted to see how much of an impact one voice could make.
What kind of work have you all done so far that you want to share?
The work we've done includes hosting a member focused garden event where we received positive feedback and got members interested in the garden internship. Participating in cic la via where plenty of community members got to learn and interact with the garden and youth. We've attended SPA convenings where we develop our action plans. Word of mouth to inform others about Safe Place for Youth and direct youth towards the access center. Also encouraging other members to take part in the events in healing arts.

What else do you want to share about your SPA team?
Our team is slowly but surely making progress educating ourselves on how to be more effective advocates through workshops, trainings and attending events. The women in our group are especially vocal and honest about their opinions, which is great.
